Bouncer vs Choosy, Velja, OpenIn, and Finicky

Every Mac browser picker worth a look, compared. Checked October 15, 2026.

The short answer

All of these apps sit in front of your browsers and send each link where it belongs, instead of letting one default browser open everything. Choosy, Velja, OpenIn, and Bouncer all have rules and a picker. Bouncer stands out for rules that know the Slack or Notion workspace, Discord server, or Mail account a link came from, Safari profiles, Arc spaces, and Dia profiles, mailto: routing, and finding links that opened in the wrong browser. Finicky is the pick if you want free and open source and are comfortable with JavaScript.

Bouncer vs Choosy

Choosy pioneered browser routing on the Mac, and it's still a solid app: a deep rule editor, a picker, and browser extensions. Both cost $10. Choosy's profile support covers Chrome, Edge, Brave, and Vivaldi; Bouncer adds Safari profiles, Arc spaces, and Dia profiles, rules by Slack or Notion workspace, Discord server, or Mail account, mailto: routing, and tracking-parameter removal.

Bouncer vs Velja

Velja, from Sindre Sorhus, was free for years and is now $10 on the Mac App Store; older versions for earlier macOS releases are still free. It has rules, a picker, URL transforms in JavaScript, and removes 200+ tracking parameters. It doesn't handle mailto: links (the developer points to a separate app). Its docs say Safari doesn't offer a way to choose a profile, and that Arc and Dia don't support the flag Velja uses to pick one. Bouncer handles all three.

Bouncer vs OpenIn

OpenIn is the most sprawling of the group: it routes links, email, phone numbers, and even files, with optional JavaScript. It costs $11.99, or comes with Setapp. Like Bouncer, it routes mailto: links and says it handles Safari profiles. Bouncer sticks to links, adds rules by Slack or Notion workspace, Discord server, or Mail account, and finds links that opened in the wrong browser so you know which rules to make.

Bouncer vs Finicky

Finicky is free and open source. Its current release (4.2.2) is configured in a JavaScript file, which is powerful if you like code. A pre-release (4.4.0-alpha, April 2026) adds a visual rules editor that works alongside the config file, plus Slack workspace matching by window title. Finicky has no picker of its own; Bouncer has a visual editor and a picker in its current release.

What about Browserosaurus?

Browserosaurus was a free, open-source picker without rules or profiles. Its developer archived it in August 2025, and it's no longer maintained.

Other options

  • Bumpr: a $2.99 picker on the App Store.
  • Browserino and Linkquisition: free, open-source pickers.
  • Default Browser by Sindre Sorhus: switches your default browser quickly, but doesn't route links.

Questions

It depends on how you work. If you want links to go to the right place without thinking about it, pick an app built around rules: Bouncer, Choosy, Velja, or OpenIn. Bouncer is the one to try if you want rules by Slack or Notion workspace, Discord server, or Mail account; Safari profiles, Arc spaces, or Dia profiles; or mailto: routing. If you're comfortable with JavaScript and want it free and open source, use Finicky.

Bouncer and OpenIn can open a link in a specific Safari profile. Choosy and Velja can't: Choosy's profiles work in Chrome, Edge, Brave, and Vivaldi, and Velja's in Chromium browsers and Firefox.

Bouncer can open a link in a specific Arc space or Dia profile. Velja can't: its site says Arc and Dia don't support the flag it uses to pick a profile. Choosy can't either: its profiles work only in Chrome, Edge, Brave, and Vivaldi.
