Links open in the wrong Chrome profile? Here’s the fix

Work links in your Work profile, personal links in Personal. Automatically.

The short answer

When you click a link outside Chrome, it opens in whichever profile you used last. That’s why a work link from Slack lands in Personal. Bouncer sits in between: set a rule once, like “Google Docs goes to Chrome Work”, and every matching link opens in that profile from then on. Links that match no rule go to the fallback browser and profile you choose.

How to set it up

  1. Install Bouncer and make it your default browser. It finds Chrome and your profiles on its own.
  2. The next time a link opens in the wrong profile, open the Bouncer menu in the menu bar and choose Create Rule from “…”, which names the link you just opened. The rule editor opens with that link filled in. Pick the right profile and save.
  3. Or start from an example link, like a Google Docs URL, and choose how broadly to match it.
  4. To split work and personal by where you clicked, limit a rule to an app, a Slack or Notion workspace, a Discord server, or a Mail account.

Questions

Yes. Bouncer handles profiles in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Arc, Dia, Edge, Brave, and Vivaldi. Arc calls its profiles spaces, and a rule can open a link in the space you pick. Opera works with Bouncer, but without profiles. Coming from Arc’s Air Traffic Control? See Air Traffic Control for Dia and Arc.

Yes, if you read it in Apple Mail. Make a rule with From... set to Mail, pick your work account under Account, and choose your work profile. Links in that account’s email then open in Work, and the rest follow your other rules.

Yes. Hold Option while you click a link to get a picker with every browser and profile, each with a keyboard shortcut.

They open in your fallback browser, and in its profile if you pick one. The fallback starts as whatever your default browser was before Bouncer.
